This coin, issued in the later years of the Franco regime (1939-75), is a descendant of the [[Spain 1891-PG M peseta (91)|silver peseta]] issued in the late nineteenth century. This denomination was first issued in aluminum bronze in 1944 (KM 767) and featured a younger, pudgier portrait of Franco in 1948-67 (KM 775). This type was issued 1967-75 in large quantities. Although the coin is dated 1966, the true minting date is incuse in the stars on the reverse, where a tiny "70" can be spied.
