Spain 1966(74) peseta

This coin, issued in the last years of the Franco regime (1939-75), is a descendant of the silver peseta issued in the late nineteenth century. This denomination was first issued in aluminum bronze in 1944 (KM 767) and featured a younger, pudgier portrait of Franco in 1948-67 (KM 775). This type was issued 1967-75 in large quantities. Although the coin is dated 1966, the true minting date is incuse in the stars on the reverse, where a tiny "74" can be spied. Spain was the only country to do this and abandoned this clumsy system after 1982, during the reign of Juan Carlos.

Recorded mintage: 181,000,000 plus 23,000 proofs.
