Goldberg sale 46, lot 1209
photo courtesy Ira & Larry Goldberg

This specimen was lot 1209 in Goldberg sale 46 (Beverly Hills, May 2008), where it sold for $5,250. The catalog description[1] noted, "Uruguay. Peso 'Fuerte', 1844 (Montevideo). Quartered arms of Uraguay, with rising sun at top, surrounded by wreath of oak. Reverse: Value within circle of nine stars. Sharp, full strike. A few light marks, otherwise surfaces are quite pristine. Fields softly lustrous to semi-reflective - with good cartwheel effect. Lightly toned. Rare in this state of preservation. Occasionally some of these coins have been found to be overstruck on U.S. dollars and Latin American pesos. NGC graded MS-64." This is a very scarce and popular crown from Uruguay. The SCWC notes coin and medal alignment. Later pesos exist, of a different design, which are much more affordable. These (KM 17 and 17a) are dated 1877-78 and 1893-95.

Recorded mintage: 1,500.

Specification: 27 g, .875 silver, .760 troy oz ASW; this specimen: 26.43 grams.

Catalog reference: Eliz-1; WR-1; KM 5.
