Uruguay SB1019-72855r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72855 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "URUGUAY. 20 Centesimos, 1844. Montevideo Mint. Republic. PCGS MS-63 Brown Gold Shield. Thin planchet/coin alignment. One of the hardest early Uruguayan issues to find in a decent state of preservation, this example is the sole mint state piece certified at PCGS with only two others certified in any grade. The CoinFacts plate coin, it has satiny, sepia brown surfaces with touches of original mint red radiating from the wreath. The luster, potent for the grade, is clear and especially attractive when rotated. Destined for one of the top Latin American collections. From the Cerro Catedral Collection." This scarce issue, nearly as heavy as a silver eight reales, is normally found worn and with multiple rim bumps. This is among the first coins of Uruguay, which obtained its independence in 1830. It was accompanied by five and forty centésimos and a rare silver peso.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 21 g, copper.

Catalog reference: KM-2.2; Antunez-5.1.1.
