This specimen was lot 1558 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 1/4 Ruble (Polupoltinnik), 1798-CNOM. Paul I (1796-1801). NGC AU-53. Very scarce type. Sharply struck. Lightly toned. Lustrous and good eye appeal." This is the scarcer of two varieties issued for the year, the other having assayer MB. The polupoltinnik ended in 1801, superseded by the twenty-five kopeks in 1827 (KM C159). OM stands for Ossip Medzher, who served 1798-1801.
Recorded mintage: 88,000 (including KM C98.1a).
Specification: 5.18 g, 0.868 fine silver.
Catalog reference: KM-C98.2; Bit-68.
