Shown is a thousand réis of the United States of Brazil, of a type struck 1900 only. It was accompanied by similar 400 réis, 2000 réis and 4000 réis to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of Brazil. The denomination was abolished in 1942 with the reform of the coinage in that year. This specimen was lot 50339 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $389. The catalog description[2] noted, "BRAZIL. 1,000 Reis, 1900. NGC MS-64. Struck to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of Brazil."
Recorded mintage: 33,000.
Specification: 12.75 g, 0.917 fine silver, .375 troy oz ASW.
