Heritage sale 3107, lot 31395
H3107-31395r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31395 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $6,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Louis XIV gold 2 Louis d'Or 1691-B AU58 NGC. Rouen mint, Flan réformé. Rare in any state of preservation, much less on the cusp of Mint State. Decidedly struck with the gentlest of rub softening the central devices, entertained by whirling luster and a woodgrain patina. The only example graded at NGC." This double louis d'or à l'écu was the first double Louis to be struck since the double louis d'or à la méche longue issued in the 1650's. This date is somewhat common for the type but the type as a whole is scarce to rare.

Recorded mintage: 18,400 fn plus more rf[2].

Specification: 13.50 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-30 mm diameter, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dupl-1434; Dr/4 № 398, Dr/2 № 256, KM 280.2 (Rare), Fr-428, Gad-259 (R2).
