Jean Elsen sale 123, lot 939
France JE123-939r.jpg

This specimen was lot 939 in Jean Elsen sale 123 (Brussels, December 2014), where it sold for €140 (about US$203 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis XVIII, seconde restauration (1815-1824), AR 5 francs, 1821 B, Rouen. Nettoyée. Très Beau. (France, Louis XVIII, second restoration (1815-24), silver five francs of 1821, Rouen mint. Cleaned, very fine.)"

This type was struck during the second restoration of Louis XVIII of France (1814-24) from numerous mints. Many of the 96 dates of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade.

Recorded mintage: 122,595[1]. Altho most issues from Rouen are common, this one is very scarce.

Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, .723 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 711.2, Dav-87, Gad-614. F.309/60.
