France 1821-A 1/4 franc

from the Mountain Groan Collection

This tiny coin was struck at Paris under the régime of king Louis XVIII of France (1814-24). It is from a type struck 1817-24. Unlike Napoleonic quarter francs, which are divided among six types, all quarter francs of this reign are of this type, which is fairly common. The catalog^[1] notes 35 dates for the type, some very rare, and notes some specimens of this date are known with medal rotation. This issue is somewhat scarce.

Recorded mintage: 21,924^[1].

Specification: 1.25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 15 mm diameter, plain edge.
