This specimen was lot 31506 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $822.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bern. City Taler 1679 AU55 PCGS. A stand-out design for Bern talers, with the customary arms of Bern on one side and four sets of backward facing Bs on the reverse formed in a cross-shaped motif. Accompanied by a valuation of $1,500 in XF in the Standard Catalog of World Coins. From the Redwood Collection, Part II." The climbing bear is the badge of Bern, Switzerland. This type is scarce, like most of the Bernese thalers of the seventeenth century.
