This specimen was lot 1740 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 425 (about US$560 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"10 Mark 1879. Darmstadt Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (grand duchy of Hesse, ten mark of 1879, extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1878-80. Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces. This type is scarce.
Recorded mintage: 56,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 3.98 g, 0.900 fine gold, .115 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: J. 219. KM 358. Fr-3789.
