Bolivia 1717-P Y real

from the Stack's Bowers February 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 76590

This specimen was lot 76590 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $145. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob Real, 1717-P Y. Potosi Mint. Philip V. NGC VF-35." In 1725, king Philip V abdicated in favor of his favorite son Louis, who died ten months later, forcing the old king to resume the throne. The silver cobs were debased from 0.931 fine to 0.917 fine in 1728. Assayer "Y" is listed for 1701-27. The Potosí mint was the last to abandon the manufacture of cobs, in 1773.
