SB0123-42082r.jpg

This specimen was lot 42082 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mughal Empire. Rupee, AH 1039 Year 3 (1630). Multan Mint. Shah Jahan I. NGC MS-63." This rupee was struck at eight mints. It was struck at Multan for years 3-6. The Mughal Empire dominated India during the seventeenth century but broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. This collapse allowed European colonizers entry into the subcontinent and eventual British control.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.44 g, silver.

Catalog reference: KM-227.8.
