Goldberg sale 55, lot 1353

This specimen was lot 1353 in Goldberg sale 55 (Beverly Hills, October 2009), where it sold for $1,150. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. ½ Franc, 1812-Flag (Utrecht). Napoleon I. Striking weakness on edge. Lightly toned with underlying luster. Very Scarce. NGC graded MS-62." This type was struck in France at numerous mints 1809-14 and a complete set comprises 64 dates and mintmarks. This date is one of the rarest, compounded by the fact that the Utrecht mint struck French coins 1812-13 only and in very small numbers.

Recorded mintage: 5,072.

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, plain edge, 18 mm diameter, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier (1763-1819).

Catalog reference: KM-691.16; Gad-399, F.178/47, Sch-171.
