This specimen was lot 1076 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,762.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, 1939. PCGS PROOF-64 BN Secure Holder. Toning over flashing brilliant surfaces. Pedigree: From the Kevin Tierney Collection." This type was issued in large numbers 1937-48 but the proofs are rare. The type of 1949-52 deleted "IND IMP" from the king's title after India obtained her independence.
Recorded mintage: 55,560,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 9.4 g, bronze, 31 mm diameter, designed by George Krueger-Gray.
Catalog reference: S-4114; KM-845; Freeman-225.
