This specimen was lot 1075 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, 1938. PCGS PROOF-65 BN Secure Holder. Toned with some plum hues, over brilliant flashing surfaces. From the Kevin Tierney Collection." This type was issued in large numbers 1937-48 but the proofs are rare. The type of 1949-52 deleted "IND IMP" from the king's title after India obtained her independence.
Recorded mintage: 121,560,000 (highest mintage date) plus proofs.
