This specimen was lot 1430 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $14,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Seville, gold milled 8 escudos, Philip V, 1719 J, extremely rare, NGC AU 55, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Segarra. Extremely rare first date of new type in much finer style with mintmark, denomination, and assayer in reverse legend, showing choice full details on a broad flan that extends past the outer border, lightly toned over luster, minor small marks and high-point wear. Pedigreed to the Fernando Segarra Collection (stated on label)." This eight escudos was struck 1719-29 in Spain at Madrid and Seville, with the Madrid issues quite a bit rarer than those of Seville. This well struck, nicely centered coin may be contrasted with the crude cobs being minted at the Latin American mints, where screw presses were not installed until the 1730's. This date comes with assayers M (rare) and J (scarce).
