This specimen was lot 57651 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Ruble, 1763-MMA El. Moscow Mint. Catherine II (the Great). PCGS VF-35. From the Collection of Richard Evans Norton (1872-1946)." This type, issued 1762-82, is fairly common from St. Petersburg but this date from Moscow is rare. Catherine the Great began life as an obscure German princess but became czarina after the murder of her husband. The rubles of Peter II were about 28 grams but this type seems to be only 24 grams.
Recorded mintage: 95,000.
Specification: 24 g, 0.750 fine silver, .578 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: Dav-1683; KM-C67.1; Bit-121.
