from the Stack's Bowers 2024 ANA sale, lot 41372
SB824-41372r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41372 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 1/4 Real, 1837-LIMA. Lima Mint. NGC MS-61. A SCARCE date in any quality, this piece is tied with one other for finest certified. While slightly weak in some areas, the coin escapes any real evidence of circulation. A subtle smattering of gray tones accent the coin's vivid luster. From the EMO Collection." This type was struck at Lima 1826-56. The date is listed in the SCWC as better. All Peruvian minors are scarcer in nice condition than the catalog values would indicate; among the quarter reales, only the 1855 is frequently seen. Many overdates are listed tho none for 1837.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.84 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: EMO-3314 (Plate coin); KM-143.1.
