Künker sale 293, lot 2044

This specimen was lot 2044 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN, TOSCANA, Lodovico I. di Borbone, König von Toscana, 1801-1803. Francescone (10 Paoli) 1803, Florenz. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich/vorzüglich. (Italy, kingdom of Etruria, Louis of Bourbon, 1801-03, francescone of 1803, Florence mint. Handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The Grand Duchy of Tuscany, founded by the Medici in the early 1500's, collapsed in 1799 with the arrival of Napoleon's army. The region went thru many vicissitudes until it was annexed outright by Napoleon in 1807, only to be returned to the Hapsburgs in 1814. It was incorporated into the new kingdom of Italy in 1860. This type was struck 1803 for Louis, king of Etruria, who died that year.
