This specimen is lot 1578 in UBS sale 84 (Basel, January 2010). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RUSSLAND. Peter II. 1727-1730. Rubel 1727, Moskau. Geharnischtes, belorbeertes Brustbild nach rechts. Rv. Vier gekrönte Monogramme ins Kreuz gestellt, in den Winkeln Ordinalzahl, dazwischen die Jahreszahl. Sehr schön-vorzuglich" (Russia, Peter II, 1727-30, ruble of 1727, Moscow mint. Obv: armored, laureate bust facing right. Rev: four crowned monograms in a cross, king's ordinal (II) in the spaces, date in the middle. Very fine to extremely fine).
The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. Many ruble types were issued only briefly and can be dated even if they don't bear dates. Rubles are known from 1727 for Catherine I (KM 177) and Peter II (shown here). This type seems fairly common as these things go but still elusive and expensive. The rubles of Peter II were about 28 grams but shrank to 20 grams by the end of the reign of Catherine the Great.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen: 28.08 grams.
