Goldberg sale 80, lot 4153

This specimen was lot 4153 in Goldberg sale 80 (Los Angeles, June 2014), where it sold for $764. The catalog description^[1] noted, "India - British. 4 Annas, 1919 (c). Copper-Nickel. Scalloped octagon. George V. Restrike. NGC graded Proof 66." This four annas was struck at the Calcutta mint after World War One. A wartime surge in the price of silver prompted the British authorities to replace the silver quarter rupee with this copper-nickel type. It must not have been a success as it was dropped after only three years (1919-21). Likewise, the copper-nickel eight annas was abandoned after 1920.
