This specimen was lot 41345 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg & Luneburg (Celle). Taler, 1659-HS. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg II Wilhelm. PCGS EF-45. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1654-64 and is one of many "wild man" thalers from this state. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg and Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle were traded back and forth between brothers until death left only one, who became the elector of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover ("Hannover" for short) and later king of England.
