This specimen was lot 70679 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Bavaria. 5 Mark, 1902-D. Munich Mint. Otto. NGC VF-35. An imposing crown with moderate handling, though strong detail and original surfaces give off an excellent appearance. The first circulation strike from this issuance we have offered in recent memory and bound to draw the attention of many German specialists." This type was struck 1891-1908 and 1913. King Otto, traumatized by his combat experience in the Austro-Prussian war, ruled under a regency for his entire reign. The kingdom was abolished with the collapse of the Empire in 1918.
