This specimen was lot 31457 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Philip V gold Cob 8 Escudos 1720/19 L-M XF - Polished, Mount Removed, Lima mint. Nicely detailed and centered, however once set in jewelry with evidence of mount removal at 12 o'clock and surfaces that have been unnaturally brightened as a result. An affordable example of the type." This type is recorded for 1710-47. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.

Recorded mintage: 53,003.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW, this specimen 32 mm diameter, 26.87 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-9971, Fr-7, KM 38.2.
