from the Stacks Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 20320
Czech SB818-20320r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20320 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $15,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "CZECHOSLOVAKIA. 10 Dukatu, 1929. NGC MS-64. Trade coinage. First year issue from a mintage of only 1,564 pieces. Obverse features Duke Wenceslas on horseback. A broad and popular type with flashy mint bloom that brightens both sides and surfaces that show few marks, the most notable being a small luster graze beneath the horse's hind hooves. Seldom available in any grade, let alone near-Gem quality." This type was struck 1929-38 and 1951 along with a dukat, 2 dukaty and 5 dukatu. This type is rarely seen circulated, suggesting the hoarding of what few examples escaped government vaults. The obverse portrait is of "good" king Wenceslas, he of the well-known Christmas carol.

Recorded mintage: 1,564.

Specification: 34.9 g, 0.986 fine gold, 42 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Fr-4; KM-14.
