This specimen was lot 21080 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $16,100. The catalog description[1] noted, "George II gold 5 Guineas 1753, XF45 NGC, stray abrasions, very faint adjustments near the rims on reverse, well detailed and nicely centered motifs, old amber-gold patina. Scarce thus. From the Highlands Park Collection of British Coins." This type is listed for 1748 and 1753 and, like all five guineas of the eighteenth century, is rare and expensive.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 41.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, 1.230 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: S-3666, KM 586.2.
