from the Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 1161
SB122-1161r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1161 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 2 Taler Klippe, 1615 (in chronogram). Johann Georg I. NGC AU-58. This Double Taler was issued to celebrate the baptism of August, the son of Johann Georg. Beautifully impressed details on the darkly toned and lightly handled lozenge-shaped planchet make this example excessively beautiful. Always a popular type, this piece is sure to impress many potential bidders." Single, double, triple and quadruple thalers were issued for this occasion along with klippes (square planchets).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-7586, KM-84.
