Goldberg NY International sale 59, lot 2174
GNY23-2174r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2174 in Goldberg's NY International sale 59 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "Poltina 1876 CΠБ. No moneyer’s initials. Rare. Tiny reverse dig. Fine." This type, struck 1859-85, normally bore assayer's initials which were left off a few of this date, intentionally or in error. The poltina with initials HI is scarce, the poltina without is rare.

Recorded mintage: 24,000 (including assayer HI).

Specification: 10.36 g, 0.868 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM Y24, Bit 122 (R1), Ilyin (8 Rubl.), S 3855 (R).
