This specimen was lot 1214 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $2530. The type was struck in Brazil 1777-86. The obverse portraits are of the queen, Maria I, and her uncle and husband, Peter III. The catalog description[1] noted, "1783 6,400 reis. Rio mint. MS-64 (NGC). Types as above. Warm yellow gold with full lustre and nice aesthetic appeal. Very slight planchet striations are noted. A near gem example of the type, exceptional quality. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
