This specimen was lot 20144 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description[1] noted, "Maria I & Pedro III gold 6400 Reis 1784-R, AU58 NGC, an attractive coin with well-struck details and nearly full mint luster, worth a premium." The type was struck 1777-86 while Maria and Pedro III were consorts. After his death in 1786, Maria is shown alone, wearing a widow's veil. The Rio issues (shown here) are fairly common but the Bahia issues are much scarcer. This coin was called a "joe" in English speaking countries.
