This specimen was one of a series struck 1778-86 for Brazil during the reign of Maria I and Pedro III. It would have traded for two-thirds of a Spanish dollar. It is lot 1709 in Stack's Coin Galleries sale (New York, April 2010). The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. Pedro III & Maria I, 1777-1786. 640 Reis, 1783. Crowned Portuguese Arms. Rv. Armillary Sphere on cross of Christ. Bold About Uncirculated. From the Eliasberg Collection."
