This silver 960 réis was minted at the Rio mint 1818-22. These coins were usually struck over Spanish-American dollars but many other undertypes are known. Large quantities were produced, making this and the similar Bahia issue the commonest Brazilian silver coin of the colonial period. The specimen was lot 20516 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010), where it sold for $3,220. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "João VI 960 Reis 1820R, 'Small Castle' (''Castelinho''), XF. KM lists this variety as 'small castle within zero of denomination' but in fact if one rotates the coin 90 degrees clockwise, one discovers the letters 'JAE', for the coin's assayer. A sneaky way the designer of this specific 960 Reis die found to put his initials on the coins."
