Künker sale 354, lot 6148

This specimen was lot 6148 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €4,200 (about US$5,845 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"REICHSSILBERMÜNZEN, BADEN, Friedrich I. 1852-1907. 5 Mark 1888, ohne Querstrich im A. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Fast Stempelglanz. (Germany, grand duchy of Baden, Frederick I, 1852-1907, five mark of 1888, without crossbar in A, rare in this quality, choice example, about uncirculated.)"

This type was struck in rather limited quantities 1875-76 and 1888. This is the scarcest of the three dates. A variety exists (KM 263.2, shown here) with the crossbar missing in the "A" of "BADEN", which earns a premium.
