This specimen was lot 21029 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $5,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. 4 Ducats, 1828-A. Vienna Mint. Franz II. NGC AU-53. A RARE type seldom encountered in the marketplace. According to the Standard Catalog of World Coins, no mintage figures are known for these issues, but it was most likely struck in limited quantities based on the small number of auction appearances over the last decade or so. The piece shows light to moderate signs or handling with plenty of flashy luster in the protected areas. A neat large size gold coin certain to catch the attention of even advanced collectors." Unlike the single ducat, which was issued from several branch mints, this type was struck 1816-30 at Vienna only. It has a modified reverse legend from Fr-461.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.96 g, 0.986 fine gold.
Catalog reference: KM 2178, Fr-462.
