This specimen was lot 704 in Scotsman's Midwest Summer Sale (St. Louis, July 2012), where it sold for $____. The catalog description noted, "1885-CC PCGS MS-65 CAC. Mintage of barely a quarter-million pieces helps explain why 1885-CC is always a more expensive Carson City dollar in GEM grade. Shimmering white luster envelopes this CACed example, and the strike is a little better than average, approaching full details; just a hint of weakness can be seen above the ear. There is not the slightest hint of toning visible anywhere, although astute bidders will detect a gentle layer of cotton-white patina that suggests fully original surfaces. A really nice coin, with a clean cheek and booming luster that should satisfy any notions of premium quality." This issue from the Carson City mint is scarce. The type was struck 1878-1904 and 1921, with the Carson City mint participating 1878-85 and 1889-93. Most Carson City mintages are low but large numbers were preserved in government vaults and dispersed in the 1970's and 1980's, making them readily available today.
