This specimen was lot 44 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, gold cob 1 escudo, 1724/3 M, extremely rare. VF with plugged hole at top but with bold full L-castle-M above date 1724 with clear overdate (missing in Tauler and first we have seen or heard of), bold full cross, toned around details." This type was struck 1702-45, all with tiny mintages. The SCWC doesn't mention the overdate noted here but it's difficult to believe more than one die was needed to strike 283 pieces. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.
Recorded mintage: 283.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3.05 grams.
