Sincona sale 63, lot 309

This specimen was lot 309 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 600 CHF (about US$752 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Mainz, Erzbistum, Albrecht von Brandenburg 1514-1545. Goldgulden 1515, Mainz. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Rand etwas beschnitten. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Albrecht of Brandenburg, 1514-45, goldgulden of 1515, Mainz mint. Very fine-extremely fine, Edge slightly clipped.)"

The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This early dated type is listed for 1515, 1534-43. It is the only gold issue of this prelate.
