Mainz 1537 goldgulden Fr-1634
This specimen was lot 2269 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €750 (about US$984 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF ALBRECHT II. VON BRANDENBURG, 1514-1545. Die Münzstätte Mainz. Albrecht II. Von Brandenburg, 1514-1545. Goldgulden 1537, Mainz. [drei Ringe übereinander] AL [drei Ringe übereinander] AR [drei Ringe übereinander] P [drei Ringe übereinander] M - O [drei Ringe übereinander] MEI 1537 [drei Ringe übereinander] Christus mit erhobener Rechten und Buch thront v. v. in gotischem Gestühl, unten Wappen von Mainz//[drei Ringe übereinander] MON [drei Ringe übereinander] - [drei Ringe übereinander] AVR [drei Ringe übereinander] - [drei Ringe übereinander] REN [drei Ringe übereinander] Spitzer Dreipaß, in der Mitte vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Magdeburg/Halberstadt/Brandenburg), in den Ecken die Schilde von Köln, Trier und Bayern. This is the only gold coin of this prelate but is common for the period. It comes undated or dated 1515, 1534-43. Albrecht, who was already in debt for his seats as archbishop of Magdeburg and administrator of Halberstadt, took out a loan to finance the fees he paid the pope for the throne of Mainz. He attempted to pay off the loan by selling indulgences, raising the ire of an obscure monk named Martin Luther.
