Stack's Bowers 2019 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72170
GB SB1019-72170r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72170 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, 1911. London Mint. PCGS MS-65 Red Gold Shield. A fully brilliant, blazing Gem, featuring impressive luster and exceptional eye appeal. From the Regent Crest Collection." This type was struck in large numbers 1911-36 and this is a common date. The bust was modified in 1926 (KM 826) and again in 1928 (KM 838) to alleviate striking problems, including the "ghosting" visible on the reverse of this specimen.

Recorded mintage: 23,079,000.

Specification: 9.4 g, bronze, 30.8 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: S-4051; KM-810.
