Stack's Bowers 2019 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72170

This specimen was lot 72170 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, 1911. London Mint. PCGS MS-65 Red Gold Shield. A fully brilliant, blazing Gem, featuring impressive luster and exceptional eye appeal. From the Regent Crest Collection." This type was struck in large numbers 1911-36 and this is a common date. The bust was modified in 1926 (KM 826) and again in 1928 (KM 838) to alleviate striking problems, including the "ghosting" visible on the reverse of this specimen.
