This specimen was lot 10287 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $276. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Baden. Kreuzer, 1844. NGC MS-63. Erection of monument to Karl Friedrich commemorative. Struck in silver. From the Demarete Collection." Our notes don't explain why this humble denomination was selected for a commemorative issue (normally thalers or double thalers were used) or why this off-metal strike was made. The type is not rare.
Recorded mintage: 54,000.
Specification: copper.
Catalog reference: KM-216 (for type); Wielandt-1048b.
