This specimen was lot 2080 in Sincona sale 25 (Zürich, October 2015), where it sold for 28,000 CHF (about US$34,586 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Taler 1561. Curved arms between S O under a nimbate double eagle. In the legend at 11 o'clock the last two numerals of the date 61. Rev. St. Ursus standing facing with long sword and banner. Of highest rarity, especially in this unique quality. Brilliant uncirculated. Cabinet piece. The taler of 1561 is in itself very rare. In this mint state conservation it is undoubtedly the finest known specimen."
The second specimen was lot 3468 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 17,000 CHF (about US$22,464 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Solothurn, Taler 1561, Solothurn. Eingebuchtetes Wappen, die obere Hälfte damasziert zwischen S - O, darüber nimbierter Doppeladler, die mindere Jahreszahl 61 am Ende der Umschrift. Rv. Stehender hl. Ursus mit Nimbus im Harnisch nach rechts. Ein Schwert in der Linken, die Rechte hält eine Lanze mit Kreuzfahne. Kopf, Beine, Schwert und Kreuzfahne teilen die Umschrift. Von grösster Seltenheit. Fast FDC. Prachtexemplar. (Switzerland, canton of Solothurn, thaler of 1561, Solothurn mint. Obverse: indented coat of arms, the upper half damasked between S - E, above it a haloed double-headed eagle, the abbreviated date 61 at the end of the inscription. Reverse: Standing St. Ursus with halo in armor to the right, a sword in the left hand, the right hand holds a lance with a cross flag, the head, legs, sword and cross flag divide the inscription. Of the highest rarity, About uncirculated, Cabinet piece.)"
The third specimen was lot 1198 in Sincona Auction 100 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 18,000 CHF (about US$27,130 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[3] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Solothurn, Stadt und Kanton, Taler 1561, Solothurn. *MONETA*SOLODORENSIS*61* Eingebuchtetes Wappen, die obere Hälfte damasziert zwischen S - O, darüber nimbierter Doppeladler. Rv. SANCTVS*VR - S - V - S - *MARTIR* Stehender hl. Ursus mit Nimbus im Harnisch nach rechts, ein Schwert in der Linken, die Rechte hält eine Lanze mit Kreuzfahne. Seltene Variante mit "MARTIR". Von grösster Seltenheit. Vorzüglich. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (Switzerland, canton of Solothurn, thaler of 1561, Solothurn mint. Davenport notes this type was also struck without date along with the similar Dav-8755 thru -8759.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, the first specimen 28.56 g, the second specimen is 28.56 g, the third specimen 28.74 g.
Catalog reference: Simmen 50. D.T. 76, HMZ 2-821f, Davenport 8756. The second and third specimens are Simmen 51a, HMZ 2-821g.
