Schwyz (1565) thaler Dav-8763
The first specimen was lot 2082 in Sincona sale 25 (Zürich, October 2015), where it sold for 12,500 CHF (about US$15,440 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Taler o. J. (about 1565). Altdorf Crowned double eagle surrounded by the three shields of arms. Rev. St. Martin as bishop on throne with crozier and mitr[e]. Very rare. Good very fine/Very fine to extremely fine. Small collector's punch in edge. St. Martin was born in Hungary about 315 and served as a Roman officer. He professed himself at an early date to Christianity and was anointed in 375 as Bishop of Tours. Ex Collection Köhlmoos, Auction Münzen und Medaillen AG 91, Basel 2001, lot 963."
The second specimen was lot 5262 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 9,500 CHF (about US$11,386 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | Uri, Schwyz & Nidwalden, Taler o. J. (um 1565), Altdorf. Gekrönter Doppeladler mit Nimben, die Wappen der drei Länder im Schriftkreis. Rv. Heiliger Martin auf Thron mit reich verzierten Säulen. Sehr selten. Gutes sehr schön. (cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Nidwalden, undated thaler from circa 1565, Altdorf mint. Obverse: crowned double-headed eagle, with the arms of the three cantons in the legend; reverse: St. Martin enthroned. Very rare, Good very fine.)"
The third specimen was lot 4171 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 10,000 CHF (about US$13,466 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[3] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Uri, Schwyz und Nidwalden, Taler o. J. (um 1560), Altdorf. Gekrönter Doppeladler umgeben von den drei kleinen Ortswappen. Rv. Der heilige Martin als Bischof auf Thron mit Krummstab und Mitra. Püntener 42.1g. Sehr selten. Gutes sehr schön. (Switzerland, cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Nidwalden, undated thaler, circa 1560, Altdorf mint. Obverse: crowned double headed eagle over three small shields; reverse: St. Martin as bishop, enthroned with crozier and miter. Very rare, Good very fine.)"
This joint issue of the three cantons is attributed to 1551-60 in Davenport but we'll date this per the auctioneers' estimate. St. Martin appears on several other Schwyz thalers, most notably Dav-8764.
