This specimen was lot 2957 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$1,077 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916. Dukat 1863 E, Karlsburg. Vorzüglich. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, ducat of 1863, Karlsburg mint, Extremely fine.)"
This type was issued 1860-65 from the Karlsburg mint in Hungary during the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria. This type was also minted at Vienna, Kremnitz (Komoczbanya in Magyar) and Venice and is often catalogued under Austria. After the reorganization of the Hapsburg empire into the Dual Monarchy in 1867, Hungary received her own coinage separate from Austrian issues. In the aftermath of World War One, the Hapsburg monarchy collapsed and Hungary became independent but without its former territories in Slovakia, Transylvania and Croatia.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.49 g.
