This specimen was lot 365 in Aureo y Calicó sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for 160 euro (about US$___). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1753/2/1. Fernando VI. Lima. J. 1/2 real. Columnario. Pátina. Escasa. MBC. (Ferdinand VI, 1746-59, half real of 1753, Lima mint, pillar type. Scarce, very fine.)"
This specimen is one of a series struck 1751-60 during the reign of Ferdinand VI (1746-59). The variety shown is an overdate, 1753/1. As a class, colonial coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, tho it is more available than the remaining mints. However, Harris[2] noted only one-fifth as many Peruvian half reales of Charles III as that of Mexico, so it can generally be said that these fractionals are scarce.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.69 grams, 0.917 fine silver, 0.049 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: Cayón-10189 (overdate), Cal. 638 var, KM 51.
