This specimen was lot 511 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $4,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, cob 4 reales, 1752 R, denomination 8/4, unique, ex-Ponte. Good central detail (which is all you can ask for in this period, particularly this final year of Lima cobs) with clear date, full denomination showing faint but certain 8/4 (an unrecorded error), most of assayer, deeply toned VF with natural surfaces (no corrosion). We cannot find any record of Lima cob 4R 1752 prior to when Sr. Ponte acquired this coin in 2007. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection." Four reales of this type were struck 1747-51 for Ferdinand VI. Assayer R stamped his coins 1749-52. Specimens with legible dates are scarce. In 1752, the Lima mint finally transitioned from cobs to milled (pillar) coinage.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 13.51 grams.
Catalog reference: Cayón-unlisted; S-L23; KM-43 (unlisted date); Cal-365.
