Sedwick Treasure Auction 36, lot 1875

This specimen was lot 1875 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, cob 1 real, 1743 V. VF with bold date in between partial pillars, assayer weak but certain, nice cross, surfaces a little porous and with some dark patches. Pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 4, with original lot-tag 568." One reales of this type were struck through the reign of Philip V. Assayer Negron y Colmenares stamped his coins 1728-38. Assayer de Vargas stamped his coins 1739-48. Specimens with legible dates are scarce. In 1728, the silver cobs were debased from 0.931 fine to 0.917 fine with no change in design. The mintage of gold commenced in 1696.
