This specimen was lot 1197 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it sold for €200 (about US$292 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"LIEGE, Principauté, Jean Théodore de Bavière (1744-1763), AR double escalin, 1753. D/ Ecu couronné, sur une crosse et une épée en sautoir. R/ Lion deb. à g., ten. une épée et un écusson liégeois couronné. Légères traces d'ajustage. presque Superbe. (bishopric of Liège, John Theodore of Bavaria, 1744-63, silver double escalin of 1753. Obverse: crowned arms over a cross, sword and crozier; reverse: lion rampant left, bearing a sword and the crowned arms of Liege. Light adjustment marks, about Extremely Fine.)"
This type is listed for 1753-54 along with its scarcer cousin, the single escalin (KM 165). This is the last collectible issue for this principality; later patagons and ducats were issued in tiny numbers and are very rare today. The principality was invaded and annexed by revolutionary France in 1797.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 8,99 g.
Catalog reference: KM 161, Chestret 684.
