This specimen was lot 914 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €200 (about US$257 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR ducaton, 1631, Anvers. Premier type. D/ B. cuirassé à d., une grande fraise au col. R/ Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. Faiblesse de frappe. presque Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, ducaton of 1631, Antwerp mint, first type. Obverse: armored bust right with ruffed collar; reverse: crowned arms supported by two lions; below, the jewels of the Golden Fleece. Weakly struck, about Very Fine.)"
Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp mint 1622-23, 1631-36 (hand mintmark, shown here) and at Brussels. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, but less so than the patagons.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver, this specimen is 32,53 g.
